General Lighting guide

Determining how much light we need for each room is up our individual needs but here is a guide.

How Much Light ? Measure your room in Sq meters

multiply this by 25 for incandescent bulbs (Standard light bulbs)

multiply by 19 for compact fluorescent (Energy efficient bulbs)

Multiply by 15 for halogen Bulbs

       Lounge

A central light chandelier with a dimmer switch is useful here. Two or three table lamps to light up the corners will give the feeling of space and a floor lamp is very useful for lighting a dark corner. Wall lights and wall washers can add dramatic effects the light from wall washers is coloured by the surfaces on which they are mounted.

Dining Room

The main lighting for this room should be over the table. Don’t hang the light too low so your diners have to peer around it.

Bedroom

A variety of lighting is needed here. Table or wall lights with individual switches or dimmers. 2 slim Lights on the dressing table works well. An general ambient light for the centre of the room try a statement piece such as a chandelier.

Children’s Bedroom

Lighting here needs to be safe and practical and fun. A night light can be reassuring and economical to run. A good central light to provide general illumination, a bedside lamp and a desk or task lamp for using with a computer, make sure the lamp doesn’t reflect in the computer screen.

Entrances, Halls and Staircases

Staircases need to be lit well, a central pendant is useful for here with the use of an energy efficient light bulb.

Entrances and Halls need to be welcoming as well as practical the use of a central Pendant light with additional table lamps will create interest.
